How to Program in Two Minutes or Less

Kev Needham | 2003-02-11

We will do what’s in the customer’s best interest.

SMACK!

We will make efficient, cost-effective use of the resources available to us.

BAM!

We will not allow internal process to get in the way of delivering a quality product.

THWACK!

The decision-makers will understand the problem we are trying to solve, and will do their best to help our product succeed if it makes sense for the market we are in.

“Boot to the head.” THWIPPP-WHACK!

We will recognize our competitors and strive to play in the same league as they do, with the ultimate goal being to lead them.

“Ready... aim... fire!” THIP-THIP-THIP - THUD

We’ll be intelligent enough to realize that just because that’s the way it’s been done for the past thirty years, that’s probably not the way it should be done now. The world’s changed a little bit in the last decade, we should too.

“Finish him.”

pop!

“Start again.”

We shall focus on our internal process to determine what’s in our best interest, which will set the direction for our product development. We shall rule by comittee, where each comittee must justify their existence by throwing roadblocks into the process, thus showing the value they bring. We shall ignore the threat of competition, because in reality we really don’t have any now, even though that may change in the near future. We will apply one business model to all products and their markets. We will rely on the opinions of those who have been here longest, even if they do not have the knowledge, experience, or skillset to formulate valid ones.

We will fear change. We will only do what’s easy. We will drive the will to live out of anyone who wants to change what we have become comfortable with. We will not listen to new ideas from new people, because they are not from our fold. We will do what we have done in the past, because it is what we know. We will insulate ourselves from the outside world. We will convince ourselves we are safe. We will not see the cement truck before it hits us.

“Well done.”

So this is what it’s like working for an old-school monopoly.

Suck.
