Customer Supporter

Like athletic supporters, but without the itch.

Usually, my customer support experiences are like being kicked in the junk.

A day or so before my big European vacation, I went out and bought a new Canon digital camera. Just days into my trip, it started giving me problems. As soon as I got back, I tried dealing with the crappy store that sold it to me, but I was outside of their 14-day return window. I walked out when the manager started his “but if you had purchased our extended warranty plan” speech. Needless to say, I wasn’t looking forward to calling Canon directly.

“Hello and thank you for calling Canon Canada customer support.
How can I help you?”

“I recently bought a Powershot A640 and I’m having problems with it. When I load it with freshly charged batteries, it usually displays a low-battery warning or simply says ‘Change battery pack’. Also, if you leave the camera on and set it down, it’ll turn itself off and leave the lens extended.”

“Okay. When you change the batteries, is the battery door fully closed and locked?”

“Yes.”

“Alright, it sounds like your camera needs to come in for service.
Do you have a pen and paper handy?”

“Yes.”

(Rattles off Calgary drop-off location)

“Alright.”

“You don’t have to call ahead, just show up with your camera and make sure you bring your sales receipt.”

Score one for the Canon Customer Supporters.

Canon is awesome. I had some problems with my 20D. They told me where to send it, and away we went. They let me know when it arrived, and set expectations on when it would be fixed. It was returned within 2 weeks and has functioned flawlessly ever since.

The 640 has a known problem with the battery door where the spring shorts out the batteries (another symptom to add to the ones here is that it gets really fricking hot). It’s a reasonably simple repair, so here’s hoping you have it back right quick.

I highly recommend dealing with “The Camera Store” in your neck of the woods. I’ve had nothing but good exeriences with them.

Yup, it came back a little over a week after I dropped it off.

I’ll have to remember that one, thanks.
