Recent Experience

Sturgess Architecture (2004–present)

As a graduate architect at Sturgess, I have gained experience in design development, construction documentation, specification writing, permitting and regulatory affairs and many related aspects of team support. The scale of the projects I have worked on vary from additions on single family residences to LEED-certified multi-storey office projects.

Trope Design Research (2002–03)

Trope is a small Halifax-based architecture firm specializing in research into passive solar building systems. While at the company I oversaw the logistics of initializing and monitoring a research project on the use of phase change materials in wall assemblies. At Trope, I spent a year of full and part time work developing and monitoring the performance of a wall configuration that optimized the passive solar gain in phase change materials, and demonstrated a beneficial effect on building operating costs.

During the extended leave of the firm’s principal, Dimitri Procos, I was the single point of contact for the firm’s clients, and responsible for supervising construction on a studio renovation project. Concurrently, I produced the working drawings for a Halifax apartment conversion project.

ENMAX Corporation — Calgary’s Electric System (1998–2001)

The deregulation of the electric industry in Alberta required the planning of numerous new computer systems to be completed at ENMAX. I built, tested and supported the development of ENMAX’s load settlement software, which served the business functions of tracking how much power competitive energy retailers used, and allocated wholesale bills between them.

Prior to the deregulation work, I was involved with all the phases of the network audit project and subsequent implementation to design and construct updated networks across the electric system. I researched, issued, and evaluated a comprehensive Request For Proposals to obtain third party networking expertise from the vendor community.

My experience while supporting the corporate drafting department allowed me to become familiar with the standard suites of AutoCAD and Microstation software, and their attendant networking, plotting and output requirements.

Codetalker Communications (1996–2000)

As the director of all financial, administrative and reporting functions at Codetalker, I oversaw the accounting, payroll, and invoicing duties for the company. Additionally, I was responsible for corporate relations with government organizations, including Revenue Canada, Industry Canada, Alberta Treasury and the City of Calgary. I had extensive dealings with corporation’s legal requirements, including the unanimous shareholder’s agreement, leases, subleases, assignments, and non-disclosure agreements.

Calgary Regional Health Authority (1997–98)

Subcontracting to the CRHA as an analyst for the Provincial Costing Project, I was responsible for data and workflow analysis required to provide patient-specific costing information to Alberta Health. Concurrently, I had responsibilities on the region’s successful Year 2000 project, which included end user interviews, documentation, and contingency planning.

Computer Consulting — Platinum, Ingenia, SysGold (1994–97)

As a contractor to Platinum Systems, I was lead technician for the installation of completely revised software onto Barrington’s enterprise-wide PC fleet, in preparation for planned upgrades to the network, accounting, and land management systems. I also consulted on Barrington’s strategy for migrating away from their legacy servers to a new Internet-oriented solution.

At the outset of the creation of the World Wide Web, I designed the first web sites for the Ontario Centre for Leadership, Ingenia West, UNIFEM, and the Big Sisters of Ottawa-Carleton. Additionally, I produced extensive new functions for the web sites of the Canadian Red Cross and the Government of Ontario.

As SysGold’s site manager for Archer Resources, I was responsible for all computer related issues at the company, both technically and strategically. As a consulting technician I supported numerous networks for junior and intermediate oil and gas companies.
