The Pilgrim Brewer

Building Form In Urban Context

One interesting feature of the Bloomfield community is the latent presence of an unused smokestack close to the site of the brewery.

A popular historic form for breweries is the tower configuration, which has the passive benefit of allowing beer-in-progress to pass downward through the building. This esquisse model ties together the form of the nearby Bloomfield smokestack with the notion of brewing in a tower. It is horizontally striated with split floor plates, making a more gradual transition between the ground, the brewing level above, and the conditioning level below.

Brewing—the boiling of the wort in tandem with the addition of hops—is the heart of the process, so it becomes the hearth in this thesis. The brewing core is differentiated from the remainder of the fabric of the brewery by form and materials.
