The Pilgrim Brewer
Site
As previously discussed, a reasonable site strategy for the neighbourhood is to complete the built face of the block, and to provide access to the inner-block courtyard via corridors between the building and its neighbours. On the corner site at Almon and Isleville Streets, this produces a modest, L-shaped building.
Site strategy
Opening one wing of the building to both the street and the inner courtyard also helps to extend the indoor-outdoor/building-neighbourhood threshold, and begins to define in plan the space drawn in one of the previous notional sections.
The site also determines the approach to the mundane consideration of loading materials and finished product from the brewery. The neighbourhood is robust enough to be able to withstand loading and unloading across the sidewalk on Almon street, eliminating the need for a rear loading dock, which would be counter to the deep structure of the community. The two programmes—brewery and public house—mesh well in this regard. When deliveries are made in the morning, the public house will generally be vacant.
