I've been thinking about getting a dog.' 'Good idea. Something to care for, and lavish with attention. 'Exactly.' 'Something in which to instill order, to structure their lives, to define a routine.' 'I suppose.' 'Someone to lord over and train to follow your every command. To blindly obey your slightest whim for the slight chance of some speculative reward in the distant future.' 'Um.' 'Someone to grovel at your feet, while you hold the course of their life in your all-powerful palm, to toy with as you see it, like marbles in a draw-string sack.' 'I'm getting a dog, dude, not hiring another intern.' 'Oh right. The SPCA would never put up with that .'
